Terms of use

The agreement between you and Syndicor for the website, your account and the Windows app.

Last updated: 10 October 2026

In short: you need to be an adult (or a parent or guardian) to have an account, you only install the app on PCs you are allowed to manage, and you accept that Syndicor makes bypassing much harder but that no filter is perfect. The app is free to use right now, and you can delete your account whenever you like.

1. This agreement

These terms are a contract between you and Syndicor ("Syndicor", "we", "us") covering the website at syndicor.io, the accounts it provides and the Syndicor application for Windows (the "app"). By creating an account, installing the app or otherwise using the service you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not create an account or install the app. Our privacy policy explains what we store and is part of this agreement.

2. Eligibility

You may create an account only if you are at least 18 years old, or if you are the parent or legal guardian of a minor and are creating the account to protect devices that minor uses. In that case you, the adult, are the account holder and are responsible for the account. The app may be installed on a device used by a minor only by, or with the consent of, that minor's parent or guardian.

3. Your account

  • Register with a working email address and confirm it when asked. We use it for security notices and account recovery, so keep it current.
  • You are responsible for everything done through your account. Keep your password and your account key private; the account key links a PC to your account and should not be shared or posted.
  • One account per person. Do not create accounts for other people or allow others to use yours, except that a parent or guardian may use their own account to protect their children's devices.
  • Tell us at [email protected] promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
  • We may refuse, suspend or close registrations that we reasonably believe break these terms, and we may close registration to new accounts at any time.

4. The service and its status

The website and account system are live. The Windows app is in development and is not yet available to download. The website, the dashboard and this agreement describe how the app is designed to work; features, requirements and release timing may change before it ships, and after release we may add, change or remove features. Where a change removes something you rely on we will try to give reasonable notice on the website or by email.

We may interrupt the service for maintenance, and we may change, suspend or discontinue the service or any part of it. We will do our best to give notice of anything planned, but we cannot promise the service will always be available.

5. Licence for the Windows app

When the app is released, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use it on Windows devices that you own or are authorised to manage, for the purpose of blocking content on those devices, subject to these terms. The app is licensed, not sold, and we keep all rights in it that are not expressly granted here.

You may not:

  • copy, modify, translate, adapt or create derivative works of the app;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, or attempt to extract its source code, except to the extent that applicable law expressly allows despite this restriction;
  • sell, rent, lease, sublicense, redistribute or make the app available to third parties;
  • remove or alter any proprietary notices; or
  • use the app to build or train a competing product.

The app may download and install updates to itself and to its block lists automatically. Some components of the app may be third-party open-source software; those components are covered by their own licences, which are listed in the app.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • install the app on any device without the authority of the person who owns or controls it, or use it to control another adult's device without their knowledge and consent;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the website, other accounts, our servers or the systems that host them, or to probe, scan or test them for vulnerabilities without our written permission;
  • overload the service, circumvent rate limits, scrape the website or automate requests to it except through an API we document for that purpose;
  • use the contact form or any other part of the service to send spam, abuse or unlawful material;
  • share, sell or publish account keys or sign-in tokens; or
  • use the service for anything that is unlawful where you live.

If you find a security problem, please report it to us privately at [email protected]; good-faith reports made that way are not a breach of this section.

7. No circumvention guarantee

Syndicor makes bypassing much harder; no filter is perfect. The app is designed so that pausing or removing it requires your password and a cooldown you choose, and so that it withstands the usual ways of switching a blocker off. Nevertheless, a person with administrator access to a PC, enough time and enough determination can defeat any software running on that PC, and new methods of circumvention appear constantly. We do not promise that the app cannot be bypassed, disabled or uninstalled.

Equally, no block list is complete or exact. Some adult content will get through and some harmless sites will be blocked by mistake. You can correct either case with your own block and allow lists. You are responsible for deciding whether the app's level of protection is suitable for your situation.

Syndicor is a software tool. It is not medical, psychological or therapeutic advice and is not a substitute for professional help. If you are struggling, please consider speaking to a qualified professional.

8. Accountability partners

If you add an accountability partner, you confirm that the person has agreed to receive weekly summary emails from us about your devices. The summaries contain counts and whether protection stayed on, never the addresses of pages visited. The partner may ask us to stop the emails at any time and we will honour that request; you may remove the partner from your settings at any time.

9. Price

Creating an account, using the website and, when it is released, using the app are currently free of charge. If we introduce paid plans or paid features in the future, they will be clearly marked, you will be told the price before you commit to anything, and nothing will be charged to you without your explicit agreement. We may also decide that some features remain free indefinitely; nothing in these terms obliges us to keep offering any particular feature free of charge forever.

10. Ending the agreement

By you. You may delete your account at any time from the account page. Deleting the account ends this agreement; the app will no longer be able to sign in to that account, and the privacy policy describes what happens to your data.

By us. We may suspend or close your account, with or without notice, if you materially breach these terms, if we are required to by law, or if continuing to provide the service to you would create a risk to us, to other users or to third parties. Where practical we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond. We may also close the service as a whole with reasonable notice.

When the agreement ends, the licence in section 5 ends and you must stop using the app. Sections 7, 11, 12 and 14 continue to apply.

11. Disclaimers

The service and the app are provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. In particular, we do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or error-free, that all adult content will be blocked, that no legitimate content will be blocked, or that the app cannot be bypassed.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranties to be excluded; in those places the exclusions above apply only to the extent the law allows, and you may have additional rights as a consumer that these terms do not take away.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, loss of profits or loss of goodwill, arising out of or in connection with the service or these terms, whether in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for all claims relating to the service in any twelve-month period is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the service in that period and fifty Canadian dollars.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we change the date at the top of this page, and for changes that materially affect your rights we also email account holders before the change takes effect. If you continue to use the service after a change takes effect you accept the updated terms; if you do not accept them, delete your account.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, and any dispute will be brought in the courts of Ontario, except that if you are a consumer the mandatory consumer-protection laws and courts of the place where you live continue to apply to you.

15. Contact

Questions about these terms: email [email protected] or use the contact form.
